New Clerical Medical research shows that 77% of brits are positive about retirement and 1 in 3 brits aspires to retire abroad.
One in three Brits wants to retire abroad, according to new research by leading pensions and investments provider Clerical Medical.
Of those who indicated they wanted to retire abroad 49% said they would move to Spain or elsewhere in Europe, 9% to Australia and 6% to the USA.
The research found 77% of respondents have a positive attitude toward retirement and the findings revealed a generational trend toward greater retirement aspirations around travel and part-time work.
Only half of respondents said their parents or grandparents travelled domestically or internationally in retirement but they themselves saw travel as key – 81% plan to travel domestically and 77% internationally. One in four does not want anything like the lifestyle their parents or grandparents had in retirement.
Clerical Medical spokesman Paul Shelley said the research revealed more than half of upcoming retirees see themselves working part-time in retirement.
"The future retiree has great aspirations for travel, career hobbies and buying new cars – one in six see themselves driving a sports car - but they're realistic about having to work longer to fund their aspirations," he said.
"Our research found 72% would like to retire by the age of 60 but only 46% thought they would actually be able to retire by 60. More than half of respondents said they think they will keep working to 65 or beyond.
"Clearly the messages around the need to plan for a comfortable future are being heard by a lot of people. It's encouraging to see that future retirees have aspirational plans." Mr Shelley said.
"One in three respondents to our survey said they do not believe they have enough information or understanding of the options to fund their retirement aspirations.
"Making your money work harder is crucial to achieving short and long term goals and seeking the advice of a financial advisor is a step in the right direction."
Looking forward to retirement is the ethos behind, 'Enjoy Tomorrow', a new campaign launched by Clerical Medical.
The campaign includes a series of sponsorship adverts within ITV1 dramas, focussing on enjoyment in retirement, and is complemented by seminars for Independent Financial Advisors to assist them in understanding pension changes brought about by A-Day in April. Clerical Medical's award-winning products and advisory services are provided to consumers via Independent Financial Advisors.
Mr Shelley said the 'Enjoy Tomorrow' campaign was about balancing an optimistic and realistic view on retirement.
"People are increasingly relying on private pensions to ensure they have a better quality of life during retirement. Retirement should be a time to enjoy life and a high standard of living can be achieved with a good private pensions and investment programme in place."
