About the Czech Koruna

The Czech Koruna replaced the Third Czechoslovak Koruna following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993. The new Koruna banknotes were originally created by overwriting the old Czechoslovak Koruna notes until fresh Czech Koruna notes were in late 1993.

Although the Koruna has served as the national currency since 1892, only the name has stayed the same as it has gone through different iterations over the years following political developments. The Koruna was the first modern gold-based currency in the region.

The Czech Republic planned to adopt the Euro in 2010, but the government suspended the plan in 2007 due to considerable opposition from the general public. In 2015, 70% of Czechs were opposed to adopting the Euro
