About the Danish Krone
Coins based on a silver standard have been used in Denmark since the 10th Century, with different versions created by each new king. These coins were known as korsmønter (‘cross coins’).
Due to depreciation in value of silver, Danish coinage frequently wasn’t worth its face value leading to the general public distrusting it. To combat this, the currency was amended several times but to no avail.
Although the Krone was first introduced in 1619, it wasn’t until 1875 that it became gold standard, after the Scandinavian Monetary Fund (comprised of Norway, Denmark and Sweden) decided to adopt it as their official currency.
The Krone is also used as the official currency in Denmark as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Although the Krone is often pegged close to the Euro, Denmark has yet to adopt it.
