Long before our corporate currency exchange brokers were helping our clients with their Egyptian Pound transfers, the Egyptian Pound was creating its own rich history.
About the Egyptian Pound
It was introduced in 1834, replacing the Egyptian Piastre as the main form of currency, although the Piastre continues to circulate today as the Pound’s sub-unit.
The Pound was pegged to the British Pound from 1914-1962, when it devalued slightly and switched to a peg with the US Dollar.
The Egyptian Pound was also used in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and Cyrenaica when it was occupied by the British, and is still in use in Gaza Strip in Palestine alongside the Israeli Shekel.
