The UK retail sales unexpectedly fell in April dragged down by the largest drop in food sales for nearly two years as retailers reported bad weather dented demand. The volume of sales (excluding fuel) declined by 1.4% from March.

The rate of UK inflation slowed more than forecast in April falling to a seven month low. Consumer prices rose 2.4% from a year earlier, down from 2.8% in March (the market was expecting a figure of 2.6-2.7%).

UK consumer price inflation declined in the previous month for the first time since September. British Inflation eased to 2.4 percent in April from 2.8 percent in March, official data showed today, an improved reading from the 2.6 percent rate that economists had predicted.

After a strong couple of weeks for USD US inflation fell for the second consecutive month in April, the first back-to-back monthly declines since late 2008. CPI inflation decreased by 0.4% on the month dropping the headline annual rate to 1.1%.

Eurozone GDP shrank by 0.2% in the first quarter of the year keeping the region in the longest recession since records began in 1995. Germany, the largest economy in the region, avoided recession but only managed a modest 0.1% growth.
